Nelson and I had our families over for dinner on the weekend. It was a lot of fun – great company and excellent food. Nelson’s mom made potato salad and my mum made her lip-smacking lemon meringue pie. Nelson was BBQ master since he is a pro when it comes to grilling (or cooking in general). I made the watermelon arugula salad and marinated the shrimp and Nelson grilled the thick and juicy rib steaks, lamb and salmon (all from Costco), as well as the shrimp (from St. Lawrence Market). He also purchased PEI oysters, which served as the appetizer and pre-dinner entertainment. My dad even had one! I had a little taste – it was like having slimy sea water in my mouth (slimy because raw oysters are slippery little suckers).
I know some people think it’s a hassle to host family dinners, but the truth is, I feel lucky to be able to spend time with my parents and in-laws. Nelson’s brother and his brother’s wife were also present, and they are really nice. I seem to be able to ham it up with Nelson’s bro – he’s a funny guy. My sister and her boyfriend were out of town, so we’ll have to have them over another time. I especially like it when my mum is relaxed – sometimes she finds fault, like all mothers do, but she seemed really happy that evening, as did my dad. I was happy to be able to share a bottle of wine with him. I love my parents a lot.
