I am not one that follows politics closely, nor do I know enough about Canada’s political parties to have a favourite. But this morning, when I heard that NDP leader, Jack Layton abruptly lost his battle to cancer, it brought great sadness to my heart. My sincere condolences go out to his partner, Olivia Chow, and the rest of his family.
Jack Layton had taken a leave from his post earlier this summer when he had learned that a second (new) cancer had hit, but he sounded so hopeful that he would beat it and would be back in September. I suppose two days ago, he came to the realization that he was losing his battle, and he wrote this letter to Canada, which was published today, after his death.
“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
RIP Jack Layton.
